Huxley's Worlds Map of the Great Big Solar System

Real map · 2024 · Great Big World Series

TLDR

The fourth map in the Great Big World Series, this map expands exponentially in scope to visualize the Milky Way Galaxy.

Juicy details

Reversing direction for our fourth map in the series, we decided to go big. WAY BIGGER. It turned out that visualizing the planets was easy. Figuring out how to show the various moons at a scale and distance that was even remotely accurate (they probably aren’t) was the fun challenge.

I tried very hard to accurately depict the actual scale of the universe. It turns out that it's impossible, the further out you get. I've always been a big Pluto fan, but this map made me realize that there is probably actually some pretty good science behind the decision to boot it out of the galaxy.

Zoomed details

The moons of Uranus, Jupiter, and Saturn were a delightful challenge to visualize.
The tiny, tiny earth and even tinier moon (which is literally in our back yard in the grand scheme of things).
The Oort Cloud and the Kuiper Belt should be more famous.
An Easter Egg, tucked inside the rings of Saturn.
The galaxy gets very vast the further away you go.
