The San Francisco 500 Club

Real map · 2025 · Mountain peaks, visualized

TLDR

This map details the 23 tallest peaks in San Francisco. For real.

Juicy details

The map's inspiration is taken from a 1979 nautical map of Bar Harbor, Maine. The 500 Club is also the name of an old school dive bar in San Francisco, which was definitely not a paid sponsor of this map.

This map is authentically useful if you are the box ticker type and want to conquer the peaks of San Francisco rising about 500 feet in height. However, the map also liberally adds fictional details (mostly to the text and extraneous diagrams on the map) in a manner that it shouldn't be completely trusted.

Partial Annotation

Produced by the SF Mapping Service [does not exist] Block by block classifications from scale color infrared photographs taken 1976 [nope], color infrared photographs taken 2021 [nope], and black and white aerial photographs taken 1912 from a Zeppelin E-42 Class [definitely, nope].
