Wait, Is That a National Park?

Fake map · 2017 · Not for planning a family vacation

TLDR

This map visualizes the many National Parks that you can visit in California, along with many that you can't because they don't exist.

Juicy details

California has many National Parks. This is good. But let's be honest, having this many National Parks can be just a little bit confusing to keep track of. I set out to design a map that shows the real National Parks. And some National Parks that might just exist, but don’t. I also had a lot of fun with the completely fictitious write-ups for each park, which actually makes it seem like even mighty Yosemite might not exist.

This map has been framed on my walls for many years. I'm always most satisfied when a visitor to my house stands in front of it for a few minutes, then turns to me with a slightly befuddled expression on their face and says, "Is Brief Victory a real National Park?"

Sadly the other 49 prints of this silk screen went missing in a move to a new house here in San Francisco. I like to hope that someone has a framed stolen copy of one of these maps on their wall and has even planned a summer vacation to a National Park that doesn't exist as poetic justice.

Zoomed details

At least 50% of these National Parks exist. Probably.
The National Park write-ups are 100% fictional. But humorous, I hope.
